ATLANTIS

Atlantis ( Greek for "daughter of Atlas") is a legendary island first mentioned in Plato's dialogues Timaeus and Critias.

In Plato's account, Atlantis was a naval power lying "in front of the Pillars of Hercules" that conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa 9,000 years before the time of Solon, or approximately 9600 BC.    According to Plato, Atlantis is reported to have sunk into the ocean "in a single day and night of misfortune".  Plato's description inspired the utopian works of several Renaissance writers, and continues to inspire today's literature and Atlantean scholarship, from pure research to science fiction to comic books to films.

modern theories of Atlantis' origins and destruction include the possibilities that Atlantis was home to extraterrestrial colonists whom after extended wars with eachother, ultimately used forbidden esoteric powers in greed and anger, and the violent resulting force ultimately led to the sinking of Atlantis in the Great Deluge, of which literary remnants can be found in every major religion.
